Review:
I think for the most part, this book was really well done. I really enjoyed the premise and the build-up of the characters and the friendship Marin had with Mabel. The character development was really well done and I found myself very invested in the story and what had happened those final weeks before Marin escaped to New York for college. However, there was definitely one major aspect that was a let-down to me and why I ultimately rated this book only a 3*.

So the character developments were great. I loved learning about Marin and her grandfather and that relationship. Her friendship with Mabel was also wonderfully portrayed. I even liked Marin’s interactions with Mabel’s family which, for the most part, were considered as secondary characters. So yes, the characters and their development was very well done.

In terms of the plot, I loved reading about the anticipation. I loved the flashbacks and what happened the summer before. I also thought that the author did a fantastic job with building everything up – as the book continued, you got snippets of every relationship and hints in terms of what truly happened those few weeks. However, that’s when I become sorely disappointed because the climax, the ultimate revealing, was such a letdown for me. Yes, it was terrible but I guess in my head, I had started to imagine this intense scene that never played out. The truth was such a step down to what I had imagined that at the end of the day, I was very disappointed.

Overall, there were definitely some fantastic elements to this book specifically the characters and how the author built up the story but at the end, that climax left me feeling very dissatisfied.
