Can't believe it's already a new year with new resolutions (lose weight, as always) and a new challenge!
Like I did for 2017, I will pick the books I will attempt to read for the 2018 challenge.
Again, I will most likely end up picking 2-3 books for each challenge (in case I fail at one of them LOL)
Again, I will most likely end up picking 2-3 books for each challenge (in case I fail at one of them LOL)
Here are the challenges:
1) A book published posthumously.
- The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson (been on my TBR for a while so I'm glad that this challenge will cover it)
2) A book of true crime.
- The Fact of a Body: A Murder and a Memoirby Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich
- American Fire: Love, Arson, and Life in a Vanishing Landby Monica Hesse
3) A classic of genre fiction (i.e. mystery, sci fi/fantasy, romance).
- The Shining by Stephen King (definitely a classic horror book)
4) A comic written and illustrated by the same person.
- Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic Series by Shinobu Ohtaka (haven't read any manga in a while BUT guess I will start again)
5) A book set in or about one of the five BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, or South Africa).
- The Gathering Storm by Robin Bridges (part of a series)
- The Crown's Game by Evelyn Skye
- Hunted by Meagan Spooner
6) A book about nature.
- Struck by Jennifer Bosworth (it's about lightning storms so...that's part of nature, right?)
7) A western.
- Walk on Earth a Stranger by Rae Carson (really enjoyed her other novels so super psyched about this one)
- Revenge and the Wild by Michelle Modesto
8) A comic written or illustrated by a person of color.
- Kamisama Hajimemashita by Julietta Suzuki (guess this year, I will just be reading a lot of manga lol)
9) A book of colonial or postcolonial literature.
- Cate of the Lost Colony by Lisa M. Klein
- Witchstruck by Victoria Lamb (a fantasy one but still set around that century or so)
- Maid of Secrets by Jennifer McGowan (I think this is still in that time period)
10) A romance novel by or about a person of color.
- Thorn by Intisar Khanani
- The Night Itself by Zoƫ Marriott
- The Young Elites by Marie Lu
- The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh
- The Secret of a Heart Note by Stacey Lee
- When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon
- The Library of Fates by Aditi Khorana (there were just so many!!)
11) A children’s classic published before 1980.
- Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery (been wanting to re-read this book since the TV series came out but haven't had the chance yet)
12) A celebrity memoir.
- Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls, and Everything in Between by Lauren Graham
- How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life by Lilly Singh (this counts...right?)
13) An Oprah Book Club selection.
- Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue (slightly worried about this selection since it's literary fiction...)
- The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski (a little worried about this one too)
14) A book of social science.
- Unwind by Neal Shusterman (found all of these in the social science fiction list so very excited for them)
- Seveneves by Neal Stephenson
15) A one-sitting book. (what does this even mean...? aren't all books technically one-sitting as long as you have the time/energy to power through?)
- Sea Hearts by Margo Lanagan (apparently there are a LOT of books that should be read in one-sitting - according to this Goodreads list so I guess the question is, will I actually be able to read these in one sitting)
- Never Never by Colleen Hoover
- Monstrous Beauty by Elizabeth Fama
- Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover
- Mermaid by Carolyn Turgeon
- Witch Song by Amber Argyle (definitely picked way too many)
16) The first book in a new-to-you YA or middle grade series.
- Blood of a Werewolf (Blood Series) by T. Lynne Tolles
- Immortal (Immortal Trilogy) by Lauren Burd
- Zombies Don't Cry (Living Dead Love Story Series) by Rusty Fischer
17) A sci fi novel with a female protagonist by a female author. (this is going to be a long list, I can tell already)
- Cinder by Marissa Meyer (I knew I held this series off for a reason)
- The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken
- Blood Red Road by Moira Young
- The Pledge by Kimberly Derting
- The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau
- Numbers by Rachel Ward (I'm stopping myself here)
18) A comic that isn’t published by Marvel, DC, or Image.
- The Prince of Tennis, Volume 1: Ryoma Echizen by Takeshi Konomi (OMG, HUGE fan of this anime so pretty excited to read the manga)
19) A book of genre fiction in translation.
- 172 Hours on the Moon by Johan Harstad
- Dream a Little Dream by Kerstin Gier (read another series from this author so have pretty high expectations)
- Arcadia Awakens by Kai Meyer
20) A book with a cover you hate.
- Those That Wake by Jesse Karp (definitely not an attractive cover but I don't really "hate" any covers so unattractive is the way I'm taking this)
- Katana by Cole Gibsen (another terrible cover)
21) A mystery by a person of color or LGBTQ+ author.
22) An essay anthology.
23) A book with a female protagonist over the age of 60.
24) An assigned book you hated (or never finished).
